ArkLaTex economy boosted by military Humvee repairs

New money to keep a critical part of America's combat force working also is giving another boost to the ArkLaTex economy.

With "we build it as if our life depends on it" as their motto, employees at the Red River Army Depot in Bowie County are taking full advantage of a federal contract that requires them to repair more than 6,000 Humvee vehicles.

"It's a great testimony to the flexibility of our workforce, their ability to take on a schedule that is very complicated and difficult to execute, and figure out ways for savings and time," says Col. Doyle Lassiter, RRAD commander.

The new contract is worth $680 million. The federal government gave RRAD the contract in January.

Lassiter said the depot is putting Humvees back in service at a record pace, 40 a day. That's an accomplishment of pride for the employees.

Gary Letcher, an RRAD employee, says, "I think it is an awesome achievement. Our guys out here are continuing busting their tails every day, and they are doing a great job."

So far this year more than 4,200 Humvees have rolled out of the depot fully repaired and ready for the U.S. military. Lassiter says he hopes to complete the program sometime next year.
