The City of Shreveport has seen an increase in the number of business robberies compared to last year, and store owners across the city are staying on guard to keep from becoming the next victim.

According to recent statistics from the Shreveport Police Department, the number of business robberies between January 2012 and August 2012 is up by 66% from that same time in 2011. The number of armed business robberies for the month of August is up by 140% from August of last year.

"We tell people, we don't want you to be paranoid but we want you to be prepared," says Sgt. Bill Goodin with the Shreveport Police Department.

The Stop and Shop Store on Jewella Avenue is one of the local stores making changes to keep them safe from a robbery.

"I feel safe right now because I have my window," says Sam Hasan. Hasan has worked at the store for more than six years and has seen the store get robbed on several occasions. He points to the recent renovations as a reason the store has not seen a robbery in recent years.

The store has added a bullet resistant window along with surveillance cameras throughout the store.

"The police be around the store all the time in the middle of the night," says Hasan.

There is no clear reason why business robberies are up compared to this time last year in the city, but the Shreveport Police department does suggest that owners stay prepared for the possibility of a robbery.

If you are a business owner, The Shreveport Police Department does offer a free armed robbery prevention seminar. If you would like more information about this program you can call the Shreveport Police Department at 318-673-7300.
