Louisiana closing Vital Records offices

Posted: Updated:
CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

State budget cuts are now changing the way you get a copy of birth and death certificates. The Department of Health and Hospitals will close service centers across the state at the end of this month, including the one on Creswell Ave. in Caddo Parish.

That means you won't be able to get a copy of a birth or death certificate on the same day any more. In the next few weeks the state will install kiosks where the service offices used to be. People can electronically request records using the kiosk that will walk them through step by step instructions. You can also order birth certificates, birth cards, or death certificates online or over the phone.

It will take 4 to 5 days to get them in the mail, unless you pay an extra fee to overnight it. Some Clerk of Courts in the state can get you a birth or death certificate the same day still.  However, right now Caddo Parish does not. The DHH is working with the Caddo Clerk of Courts to try and get them trained to provide that service in the future.
