SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Louisiana Rep. Roy Burrell, (D) Dist. 2, called a town hall meeting Monday to discuss the future of LSU Health in Shreveport.
He addressed several issues, included the future privatization, budget cuts and the talk of selling LSU Health.
People in the community came together to hear Burrell and voice their concerns. They met at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum at 3015 Greenwood Road.
Burrell says he wants the public to know what's going on with the hospital.
"This is what I'm pushing for. To get us back involved in this. The cuts that are being done now that came down from the federal government has created a situation where ... LSU is being forced into a privatization situation, possibly. Or either a sale," Burrell says.
This fiscal year the Shreveport hospital faced a $46-million deficit.
Recent cuts to Medicaid have impacted the LSU System budget, and the Department of Health and Hospitals has asked the public hospital system to find a new way to structure things to save money.
There have been rumors that there will be cuts here, even the possibility of selling the Shreveport hospital. However, LSU Health Shreveport says no final decisions have been made.
While the systems hospitals in both Monroe and Pineville have already faced staff cuts, administrators say right now there is no plan for lay-offs or attrition at LSU Health Shreveport.
