SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - The 20-year-old man involved in a fight early Sunday in downtown Shreveport has died.
After police announced his death Thursday night, Demerius Smith saw his charges upgraded from battery to second degree murder.
Robert Farmer died Thursday evening at LSU Health, where he was taken for treatment of severe injuries that Shreveport Police say Farmer suffered during a fight with multiple people.
Arrested in connection with the fight were Darrell Phillips, 27, of the 3400 block of Desoto Street, and Smith, 23, of the 2300 block of Mrytle Street in Alexandria. Phillips' charge of second degree battery have not changed.
Their arrests follows an incident that occurred shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday when police say they were flagged down in the 500 block of Commerce Street and were told about an unconscious man lying near the Texas Street Bridge.
They say Farmer was struck in the face during the fight. The impact caused him to fall and strike his head on the pavement.
Police say additional charges could follow.
