Clean up begins at the Jewella shelter

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Hurricane Isaac is long gone, the water along the coast is receding, and now all the evacuees here in Shreveport are closer to home. The Jewella shelter is empty, and now they're already gearing up for the next call for help to go out.

"They'll do a turn around of the shelter and get it prepared for in the event that we have another storm come in and we have to re-evacuate South Louisiana. We hope we don't but the locals here, particularly DCFS, Department of Children and Family Services, takes care of this shelter. They'll be getting it cleaned up, get cots set back up, clean cots, clean pillows, clean blankets ready to go again if need be" Sandy Davis says. Clean up crews started by midnight Wednesday. Dumpsters in the back of the shelter were piled full of trash bags and pillows.

Thousands of evacuees lived there together for days, and now that is it empty, they have to prepare for another disaster. The National Guard and the shower and bathroom contractors have been pulled, and the state police have been dropped down to one unit. All of the bedding needs to be cleaned, along with the building to make it livable for future evacuees. It's taken more than three dumpsters just to trash the pillows. In case there is a disaster before this shelter is ready to re-open, their Westpark shelter is ready to be called into action now.
