SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Some residents who live in Shreveport's Cherokee park neighborhood want to know who is responsible for cleaning a local bayou.

Residents who live along the Cherokee Park Bayou say that the body of water that once was beautiful is now filled with trash and has become a nuisance.

"I don't think there's any maintenance on it at all," says Gilbert Ross who lives near Cherokee Park Bayou. Ross has lived in the Cherokee Park neighborhood for more than 20 years and wants to know why there is no maintenance on the bayou.

"They need to come out and clean it out," says resident Dorothy Evans. She complains that the water behind her house is now just a breeding ground for mosquitoes and snakes. She also says that another disturbance is the foul odor.

According to Dale Sibley with the City of Shreveport, "the city cannot spend public funds on private property." The bayou is the responsibility of the residents who live along it.

The residents we spoke with say they were never notified of their responsibility to clean the body of water.

According to Randy Lucky with the Caddo Commission, the commission has money set aside to assist with the clean-up effort, but without approval from the Attorney General the Parish cannot act on the matter.
