CADDO-BOSSIER PARISH, LA (KSLA) -
Hundreds of people are filling up shelters in the ArkLaTex, and hundreds, if not thousands, more are expected.
The state-run shelter on Jewella Avenue is now open and is expecting between 500 and 2,000 evacuees from that area to show up here overnight.
Evacuees who will be sheltered here didn't have their own transportation to evacuate, so they are being bussed here.
Right now, they are being taken to a shelter in Alexandria, and, once that shelter is full, evacuees will be brought to Shreveport.
That old Sam's Club shelter on Jewella is one of two state-run shelters that was part of a KSLA News 12 investigation into poor living conditions four years ago this week.
That was after Hurricane Gustav forced evacuations in 2008.
After KSLA's investigation, Gov. Bobby Jindal fired then Department of Social Services Secretary Ann Williamson and promised an comprehensive review of all evacuation shelters.
Shelters from the Red Cross include LSU Shreveport, which has 64 people as of 8 p.m. A shelter in Ruston has 35 evacuees.
