SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
As Hurricane Isaac storms through Louisiana, city workers continue preparing for potential flooding, strong winds and a possible influx of evacuees.
The primary concerns for Shreveport are flash flooding, downed tree limbs and trees already weakened by last year's severe drought. Here's a summary of the City's preparations:
• Sand bags are being made available to Shreveport residents. These can be picked up at the Department of Public Works office at 3825 Mansfield Rd. Proof of residence is required and individuals will be issued up to 25 sand bags, while businesses can get 50.
• Work crews are checking and clearing debris from all major drainage ditches and areas known for flooding.
• Equipment and pumps have been serviced to keep wastewater flowing as groundwater rushes through sewer mains.
• Extra crews from public works and water and sewer will be available as needed throughout the storm.
• Additional fire and police personnel also are on standby to respond to emergencies.
• Shelters for evacuees have plenty available space at LSUS; Jewella and Westpark.
Sandbags are also being made available to Bossier City residents through 5 p.m. today at the Bossier City Public Service Complex at 3223 Old Shed Road.
Sandbags will also be available for pickup at the same location Thursday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
