West Nile outbreak in Texarkana prompts Bowie County warning

Residents in Bowie County, Texas are being asked to take precautions against the West Nile virus.

The Bowie County Health Department held a news conference Wednesday to announce that at least nine people have been treated for the virus in Texarkana hospitals.

A 70-year-old woman has died from West Nile.

"About one percent of those who obtain the disease at some state will go on to develop neurovascular, and the neuro variety is the one usually causes death. And, again, death is most commonly in the elderly," says Dr. Robert Fry of the Bowie County Health Department.

Today's announcement has several Bowie County cities preparing to increase mosquito control.

Residents are encouraged to empty outside standing water on their property.
