SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

After beginning her fight against an advanced stage of cancer, Caddo Parish Commissioner, Joyce Bowman returned to her seat at Monday's commissioner's meeting. She was immediately given a resounding show of support.

Not only did she see a standing ovation from her fellow commissioners, and the administration, she saw them donning supportive T-shirts over their suits. The shirts read "Fighter" and featured a pair of boxing gloves to represent Bowman's trademark brashness and fearlessness as she tackles issues like crime and safety.

Bowman, who is undergoing chemotherapy was a few minutes late to the meeting. When she arrived commissioners, who were in the middle of a discussion, abruptly stopped when someone said "Everyone stand please." Applause that lasted about a minute followed.

Bowman could be seen covering her face and wiping away tears during the applause. She says she was overcome with emotion to see the kindness from her fellow commissioners.

The whole time I've been in public office, I never cried in public. But all these nice gestures have just overwhelmed me," said Bowman.

Bowman says she won't be able to attend every meeting, but will try to attend when there is a vote so that she can continue serving the people of Caddo Parish.
