The Shreveport Police Department has identified the officers involved in Saturday's shooting of a fleeing suspect on Interstate 20.
According to SPD, it was Officer Jennifer Monereau attempted to stop a tan-colored Lincoln Town Car just before 4 a.m. on August 18. Police say the driver of that Town Car, identified as 22-year-old Deeric Bailey, refused to stop and attempted to elude authorities.
During a brief pursuit, police say Bailey struck the vehicle of an unsuspecting motorist and continued westbound on I20 just west of the Linwood Avenue exit ramp, where he lost control and hit a concrete barrier.
According to a statement released by SPD, as officers approached Bailey's vehicle, he refused to comply with their commands. In an attempt to flee again, they say Bailey almost ran over one of the passengers who had jumped out of the vehicle when it struck the barrier.
It was then that police say Officer Hai Phan fired multiple shots at Bailey, after which Bailey drove off before coming to a stop at the top of an embankment beyond the shoulder of the interstate.
Bailey was pronounced dead at LSU Health. Officer Monereau was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.
Both Phan and Monereau have been placed on paid administrative leave, in accordance with departmental policy.
Police say the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
