SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A Caddo Parish judge has denied a request for a delay in the trial of the man accused of shooting and killing Shreveport police Sgt. Timothy Prunty.

Christopher Cope is charged with first degree murder in the death of Sgt. Prunty. He is also charged with attempted first degree murder for firing into a guard shack. The guard on duty was not hurt.

Police say Sgt. Prunty was standing outside of a convenience store when Cope started firing.

Prunty was a 19-year veteran of the force. In May, Cope's defense team asked for extra time, saying they were not prepared.

On Monday, Judge Mike Pitman denied that defense motion for a continuance. Cope's trial remains scheduled Oct. 8.
