Shoppers flood Texas stores seeking Lone Star tax savings

TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -

Shopping in Texas is all the more special this weekend because of a halt to state sales taxes.

Tax-free weekend in the Lone Star State began at midnight Friday morning, when shoppers began saving about $8 on every $100 spent.

The goal is to give parents a break on clothing, footwear, backpacks, school supplies and other necessities that retail for less than $100.

"I am school shopping and birthday shopping, too," says Kim Seibert, who was seen in the isles of a Target store in Texarkana, Texas.

A person shopping with Kathereen Pearson says, "If it was left up to her, she would buy out the whole store."

Shoppers say the tax exemption makes Texas stores attractive for the next three days.

"It saves a lot of money and, especially if you can get them on sale, and then the tax free -- that helps a lot," Pearson says.

Officials at this store say they have stocked up with extra tax-free items, and they've brought in extra help for a busy weekend.

The sale ends Sunday.
