Posted: Updated:

Four new East Texas counties have been added to a map of confirmed human West Nile Virus cases.

The map, released by the Texas Department of State Health Services on August 17, shows new cases in Harrison, Smith, Rusk and Panola Counties. This is added to two human cases of the virus that were already reported in Gregg County. A confirmed case of equine West Nile has been confirmed in Cass and Smith Counties.

Stephanie Taylor with the Northeast Texas Public Health District said they were not aware of the confirmations from the state, other than the one horse case, as of 1p.m. Friday. She said it is possible that some tests could have been sent straight to Austin and not tested locally, and their agency would not be notified until the results come back.

The NETPHD expects results back with the latest round of tests from Austin sometime Friday afternoon.

West Nile Fever cases were previously reported in Van Zandt, Henderson, Lamar and Angelina Counties.

West Nile Fever is the milder form of West Nile Virus.
