LAPLACE, LA (WAFB) -

The Louisiana State Police held a news conference at Noon Friday to shed some light on the suspects connected with the deadly ambush that killed two sheriff's deputies and two injured Thursday. At the time of the news conference, only six suspects were in custody and identified.

The six identified were.

Terry Smith, 44, of LaPlace, charged with principal to attempted first degree murder of a police officer
Brian Lyn Smith, 24, of LaPlace, will be charged with attempted first degree murder of a police officer when he is released from the hospital
Derrick Smith, 22, of LaPlace, charged with principal to attempted first degree murder of a police officer
Kyle David Joekel, 28, of LaPlace, will be charged with principal to attempted first degree murder of a police officer when he is released from the hospital
Chanel Skains, 37, of LaPlace, charged with accessory after the fact to attempted first degree murder of a police officer
Teniecha Bright, 21, of LaPlace, charged with principal to attempted first degree murder of a police officer

The seventh suspect placed into custody is Brittney Keith, 23, of LaPlace. She is charged with accessory after the fact to attempted first degree murder of a police officer.

All of these charges stem from the initial shooting of Michael Scott Boyington.

DeSoto Parish lieutenant Robert Davidson said the suspected shooters were Kyle Joekel, 29, and Brian Smith.

He says Joekel is a fugitive from Nebraska. Smith's father, Terry, and his brother Derrick are in custody.

Sources also said one or more of the suspects arrested may be contract workers for Valero and added the individuals consider themselves "sovereign citizens."

It all started in the Valero parking lot around 5 a.m. Investigators said a gunman opened fire on Deputy Jason Triche, hitting him and his car multiple times. That bullet-riddled vehicle was taken to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Deputies then followed a speeding vehicle to a trailer park.

"As we were interviewing the two persons, the two subjects, another person exited that trailer with an assault weapon and ambushed, ambushed my two officers," Sheriff Mike Tregre explained.

In the Thursday afternoon news conference, Col. Mike Edmonson said in excess of 20 shots were fired.

Deputy Brandon Nielson, 34, a husband and father of five, had been with the St. John the Baptist Sheriff's Office for nearly two years. Deputy Jeremy Triche, 27, a 4-year veteran, leaves behind his wife and 2-year-old son. Deputies Jason Triche, 30, and Michael Boyington II, 33, are recovering from their wounds and expected to survive.

"Please pray for the two officers that were ambushed early this morning," Tregre asked of the public.

He also asked for people to pray for the two deputies that were wounded. Several blood drives are scheduled in their honor.

A candlelight vigil will be held Friday at 8 p.m. at the St. John the Baptist Sheriff's Office.
