Resident fights for renewable energy

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

One resident in the Azalea Gardens Subdivision in Shreveport is speaking out against the neighborhood homeowner's association after being denied the right to install solar energy panels on his home.

Brian Salvatore says the association denied his request to install solar panels on his home referring to reasons listed in the subdivision covenant.

"Appearance, harmonious relationship among structure and topography, property values, and quality of life within the subdivision," reads Salvatore from a letter he received from the association after requesting approval for his solar panel plans.

Salvatore says after solar panels are installed on his home he could save up to 75% off of his power bill.

"Your house uses the electricity you produce first, and if you produce more than what your using then you sell it back to your power company," says Ken Ante with Wilhite Solar Solution.

According to the subdivision covenant, signed by each homeowner within the neighborhood when they move in, the association has the right to architectural control in each lot.

"If you want to lower your cost of living you should be able to and no one should be able to stop you," says Azalea Gardens resident Mirian Hankins.

KSLA News 12 did reach out to the Azalea Gardens Homeowner's association but they declined to comment on the matter.
