Angry over speeders, resident puts out cones

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

"I put an "S" curve because people come down this 25 mile an hour street at 60 miles an hour," said Southern Hills resident, Chad Becker to two patrol officers in his front yard in early August.

He was angry over speeding on his street, Normandy Drive, and what he considers the lack of interest in enforcing the speed limit. "How are they bothering you?" asks one police officer. Becker appears annoyed at the question and tells the officer he has kids.

Becker was so bothered by the speeding, he placed traffic cones in the middle of the street to enforce the speed limit himself. "I put cones out y'all show up in five minutes," Becker told police. He tells KSLA News 12 it's not the first time he's done it. And despite threats of arrest, Becker says it won't be the last.

"I know everyone feels they have a good complaint, and that's why we try to address all of them, it just takes a little time," said Sgt. Don Vishnefski with the Shreveport Police Department's Traffic Division. He was right, after a little time and after the confrontation the Shreveport Police Department did address his concern.

"We received a complaint about Normandie Drive about the speeding through here, and so we addressed the situation and sent some officers out there to run some radar," said Sgt. Vishnefski. This month police wrote at least 56 tickets on Normandie Drive alone, half of them for speeding.

While police vow to continue cracking down on speeders here, and other areas police are asking for the public's patience. "I would just ask that he let us do our job and not put stuff in the roadway," said Sgt. Vishnefski.

Police say manipulating traffic is illegal, and if someone were to crash as a result, the person could be held liable for damages.
