SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann certainly didn't go to work thinking he would get into a shoot out.

His family had no idea he would never come home. The dangers of the job can never be predicted. A situation can turn deadly in just a matter of minutes for these officers.

Last year, 173 officers were killed in the line of duty throughout the country. Texas has the second highest number on that list. One of those officers down in Texas was from right here in our viewing area.

Deputy Sherri Jones was shot and killed in the basement of the Bowie County Courthouse while preparing to transport a prisoner. She was overpowered and fatally shot with her own gun. When we look at all 2011 deaths you can see that 67 officers died from a gunshot. Those deaths range from drowning to heat exhaustion.

So far this year, 64 officers have died in the line of duty, 23 from gun shots. Topping that list is Constable Brian Bachmann who died yesterday. He was shot and killed while serving an eviction notice at a home in College Station. So far this year, Texas has the highest number of officers down and half of those are from gun shots.
