SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Two new cases of the West Nile Virus have hit the ArkLaTex, with one in Bossier Parish and the other in Caddo Parish. Health Officials are warning residents to stay clear of mosquitoes in order to avoid the potentially dangerous disease.
The confirmed case of West Nile in Caddo Parish involves a 48 year old woman from Desoto Parish. Doctors at LSU Health diagnosed her on Thursday. She suffered from a loss of appetite and weakness for close to a week before being diagnosed. She has been released from the hospital.
Symptoms of the West Nile Fever are similar to a cold and can include fever, head ache, and tiredness. The symptoms of the more invasive form of the disease include neck stiffness, tremors, and even a coma. The majority of people will not develop the more severe form.
"The majority of people develop an immune response and get rid of the virus without ever developing any symptoms," says Dr. Joseph Bochinni with LSU Health.
You can limit your chances of catching the virus by avoiding mosquitoes. Officials suggest not wearing perfumes or colognes, and limiting your time outside in the evenings.
"Walk around and inspect your property. If you have anything that can hold water even for a couple of days mosquitoes are going to breed in it," says Bryan Glasscock with the Caddo Parish mosquito control.
There have been a total of three West Nile Cases between Caddo and Bossier Parishes this summer.
