Salvation Army names building to honor cancer-stricken Caddo commissioner
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Caddo Parish Commissioner Joyce Bowman was honored Friday for her years of dedication to the community.
The Jess Merkle Foundation dedicated the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club Gym in her name.
Bowman is battling cancer, and the disease is in an advanced stage. Bowman has just finished her first full week of chemotherapy.
The Salvation Army says Bowman has made a huge impact on their group. They praised her hard work and "dedication" to the organization.
They hope the plaque on the wall will inspire many young people to live up to her strength.
Bowman says she's touched her community would honor her in this way.
Meanwhile, a prayer vigil and love day celebration are being planned for the commissioner. The event, to be called "Friends of the Fighter," will be held August 16 at Praise Temple Full Gospel Baptist on Greenwood Road in Shreveport.
