Domestic violence down in Shreveport

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Domestic violence tends to garner plenty of attention, particularly when such cases end in shooting. But the number of domestic violence cases in Shreveport has fallen in the past three years, according to city statistics.

Shreveport police report that officers responded to 1,441 domestic trouble calls through July 31 of this year. That's down from the 1,648 domestic trouble calls during that same six-month period in 2011. There were 2,033 domestic trouble calls during the first six months in 2010.

For statistics involving the full year, the total number of domestic trouble calls also has fallen.

Officers responded to 2,728 such calls in 2011, down from a total of 3,351 calls in 2010 and 3,483 calls for all of 2009.

Not every domestic trouble call for help is going to be domestic in nature, Shreveport police spokesman Bill Goodin says.

"There are obviously going to be times when an officer is dispatched to a domestic dispute and, upon arrival, learns it is something entirely different," Goodin says.

Even so, police are legally bound take each call seriously, Goodin says.
