SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Law enforcement officials are warning motorcycle riders against wearing improper protective gear after a biker loses his life in a crash Tuesday.
37-year-old Michael Dodson of Owasso, OK died in a two vehicle crash on Sligo Road. He was wearing a helmet, but it was not approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Helmets with the sticker label "DOT" are approved, and have been crash tested. "An approved helmet will significantly decrease your chance of death or serious head injury," says State Trooper Matt Harris.
Novelty helmets, that are not approved, are popular among riders who are looking for style. These helmets, however, are not as protective and are not allowed to be worn on the road in states that have helmet laws in place for riders.
"I would never consider riding or getting on the back of a motorcycle without a helmet," says Ashley Kneipp. She was thrown 20 feet off of her boyfriend's motorcycle in a crash a little more than a month ago. It was the D.O.T. approved helmet that saved her life.
