SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Shreveport police say they have a suspect in custody in Wednesday afternoon's armed robbery at the Capital One Bank branch in the 5700 block of Youree Drive.
It happened around 2:40 p.m. Police say the lone male went into the bank and told the teller he had a gun, although they say he never produced one. After getting the money, the man fled on foot in an unknown direction.
There were customers inside the bank at the time, but no one was injured. Witnesses described him as a light-skinned black or possibly Hispanic male with a scruffy beard and green eyes, wearing a t-shirt with blue writing on the front and dirty blue jeans.
About an hour later, a plainclothes officer spotted a man fitting the description of the bandit near the intersection of Youree Drive and East Bert Kouns Industrial Loop. As officers converged on the suspect, later identified as 22-year-old Timothy Mathew, he fled on foot but was apprehended in short order.
Police say they recovered a portion of the cash Mathew had stolen from the bank as well. Mathew, of the of the 2600 block of Via Caballero in Santa Fe, New Mexico, was transported to the detective office at the Shreveport Police Complex and as investigators were interviewing him, he made a break for it and tried to run out of the building.
Authorities quickly foiled his escape attempt and he was booked into the Shreveport City Jail on one count each of simple robbery, resisting an officer and attempted simple escape.
