TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -
Due to recent mass shootings, the Texarkana, Texas Police Department is encouraging citizens to view a video clip detailing how to survive an active shooter scenario.
According to a statement released Tuesday, the TTPD "would like to advise citizens that this type of incident could occur anytime, including Texarkana."
With this in mind, a recent video clip has been distributed from the City of Houston, titled, 'Run. Hide. Fight: Surviving an Active Shooter Event.'
The video describes the events that may occur as a mass shooting takes place in an office building. As the title suggests, the video advises the viewer of three alternatives in such a situation. While running and hiding are self-explanatory, it also includes specifics on fighting back, "as a last resort, and only if your life is in danger." The advice includes attempting to incapacitate the shooter, acting with physical aggression, improvising weapons and committing to your actions.
TTPD makes a point to say that they are only providing this information as a resource to the public and are not necessarily endorsing the video: "If you should watch the video, please remember that the actions taken by the "potential victims" are suggestions and individual responses may be, in fact, different in a "real life" shooting incident."
The video can be viewed in English or Spanish at www.readyhoustontx.gov.
The Texarkana, Texas Police Department also points out that their Department of Public Information and Crime Prevention unit offers safety and crime prevention presentations, including preparedness for similar events.
Organizations and businesses interested in arranging for a presentation can contact Officer Ed Emilia at (903) 798-3114.
