ArkLaTex shoppers flock to stores during tax-free holiday

SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) -

ArkLaTex residents came out to stores en masse Saturday to take advantage of tax free holiday shopping, primarily with back-to-school supplies in mind.

Shoppers in Louisiana are making purchases free of the four percent state sales tax, and Arkansas residents can buy items without the six percent state sales tax.

Stores have been crowded since yesterday in Louisiana with shoppers taking advantage of the discounts on school supplies.

KSLA News 12 discovered that stores across the region are doing their best to handle the larger crowds of customers.

Here's a look at exactly when these tax-free events are taking place throughout the ArkLaTex:

  • In Louisiana, the tax-free holiday actually started Friday and wraps up tonight.
  • In Arkansas, tax-free shopping started Saturday and continues on Sunday.
  • In Texas, the tax-free holiday is Aug. 17th through the 19th.

A word of advice: If you make purchases this weekend on school supplies, then you might want to keep the receipts. These items could be deductions on your tax returns.

You can check to see which items qualify on your state's department of revenue website.
