SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - Caddo District 5 Commissioner Joyce Bowman has revealed she is battling cancer.
Bowman tells KSLA News 12 she has been admitted to LSU Health for treatment of liver cancer.
The 57-year-old elected official has been a tough and outspoken leader in the parish, most recently hosting a rally with law enforcement to take back the streets of Queensborough from crime and violence.
The former Shreveport City Council member announced in May 2010 that she would not seek re-election, due to health reasons. At the time, she revealed she has rheumatoid arthritis, a painful condition she was diagnosed with in 2008.
She then was appointed to the Caddo Commission to replace Sam Jenkins, who ran for and was elected to her seat on the council. Earlier this year, she ran unopposed for the District 5 seat on the Commission and won the seat outright.
Bowman is the first African-American woman to chair both the Caddo Commission and Shreveport City Council.
