SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Shreveport Police have arrested 26-year-old Jeremy Jackson after he allegedly hit a pedestrian with his truck and drove off, severing a man's leg in the process.

27-year-old James Nance lost his leg, below the knee, after an early morning accident, on Saturday in Shreveport. According to investigators Nance was allegedly walking in the road at the 300 block of West Bert Kouns Industrial Loop when a vehicle struck him.

Nance was transported to LSU Health Sciences Center by the Shreveport Fire Department with serious injuries. The victim's condition is unknown at this point but authorities say he is expected to survive. A K-9 unit was dispatched to the scene of the crash shortly after the accident to search for the severed leg. They were successful; however authorities tell KSLA News 12 doctors were unable to reattach the limb.

In the early stages of their investigation Shreveport Crash Investigators discovered it was a 2007 Chevrolet truck, traveling East bound on Bert Kouns, that struck Nance. Police say the driver of that truck was 26-year-old Jeremy Jackson. Jackson initially told police he did not stop to help because was unaware he had hit a person, and that he thought he had driven over some debris in the roadway.

At 2:15 pm on Saturday afternoon Jackson was arrested and booked in the city jail on one count of felony hit and run, expired registration, driving under suspension and no insurance.
