SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) -

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration announced more than 90 arrests from all over the country in the first- ever nationwide crackdown on bath salts and other synthetic designer drugs.

"These synthetic drugs are deceptively marketed as bath salts, and spice and incense, and even marketed as plant food," says James Chaparro with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Nearly five million packets of synthetic drugs which are typically marketed as bath salts or herbs were confiscated by the DEA during the nationwide sting called Operation Log Jam.

Shreveport and Bossier City were on the list of cities the DEA targeted.

And while many of the drugs are sold under the guise of bath salts or herbs that are not for human consumption agents are able to confiscate them through the Substance Analogue Enforcement Act of 1986, which allows them to be treated as controlled substances if they are proven to be chemically and or pharmacologically similar to a schedule 1 or schedule II controlled substances.

The drugs are said to mimic the effects of cocaine, LSD or meth.
