SAN DIEGO (RNN) - Arlene Holmes was taken out of context when she was quoted saying she wasn't surprised her son, James Eagan Holmes, had been arrested for opening fire at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises, according to a statement from the family.
In a story from ABC News, a reporter who interviewed the mother said she thought he was likely the man who killed 12 and injured 58 at an Aurora, CO, movie theater.
"You have the right person," she said, apparently speaking from gut instinct. "I need to call the police … I need to fly out to Colorado."
However, in Monday's statement, Arlene Holmes said she woke to a phone call at about 5:45 a.m. PT Friday morning from a reporter with ABC News. He asked her if she was the mother of James Eagan Holmes. She insisted that when she said, "You have the right person," she was referring only to herself.
"I didn't know anything about a shooting in Aurora [Colorado] at that time," she said.
Speaking on behalf of the family at a press conference in San Diego, criminal defense attorney Lisa Damiani said the family has not been contacted by the Aurora Police Department.
Despite saying his mother had been misquoted, Damiani would not say the family was surprised to hear James Holmes was allegedly involved in the shooting, simply telling reporters that she had "no comment."
Damiani would not comment on where the family is now, nor on how "close" they are, saying the family was looking for privacy while it worked through the arrest of their son. She declined to discuss the details of the case, and would not comment on James Eagan Holmes' personality.
When asked about specific news reports which noted James Eagan Holmes's erratic behavior, she said she could not comment and had not delved into news reports on his state of mind.
In fact, she said she and the family had kept from following the case at all thus far.
