CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

A suspect accused of first-degree murder in the death of her one-year-old infant was ordered to LSU Health for mental evaluation during an appearance Wednesday in a Caddo Parish courtroom.

Alasundria Avery is accused of beating her daughter, Denise Avery, to death. Detectives say the beating happened at Avery's home in the 3100 block of Metal Street in October of last year. Police arrested Avery after taking her unresponsive child to LSU Hospital.

Police say Avery was 8-months pregnant at the time of her arrest.

Earlier this year a judge denied a motion to remove the Caddo Parish District Attorne's office from prosecuting her in this case because they also are defending her a victim in a separate case. Caddo Parish First Assistant District Attorney Dale Cox is prosecuting the case.

The attorney's office says no future court dates have been set.
