SPD turns to technology to help fight crime

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Shreveport police say they hope using social media will help catch criminals.

The city of Shreveport has added more interactive crime fighting tools to its website, shreveportla.gov, within recent years to help combat rising crime rates.

Shreveport Police Department Sgt. Bill Goodin says residential burglaries in the city have dropped by 8 percent because of tools like the interactive crime map help. Goodin says the crime map helps residents to remain aware of crime in their community so it can be reported. He says soon there will be a new link for residents to request more police patrol in their neighborhood when they are on vacation.

Outside agencies like Crime Stoppers are now taking crime tips through texts. You can text a photo or tip and still remain anonymous.

"Hopefully that information will pay off in a furtherance of that collaborative," says Goodin.
