Train plows into tanker truck in Keithville; driver survives

KEITHVILLE, LA (KSLA) -

A Texas man is lucky to be alive after a train collided with the tanker truck he was driving Sunday afternoon in Keithville.

Casey D. Blakeney, 31, of Jacksonville, Texas suffered moderate injuries in the wreck.  Caddo Parish deputies working the wreck say Blakeney underestimated how long it would take his empty tanker truck to cross the railroad track.

Blakeney was driving west on Vardaman Road just west of Keithville-Keatchie Road about 3:30 p.m. when he reached the track.

Deputies say Blakeney stopped on the tracks just past the posted yield sign. He tried to move but was struck by the southbound Union Pacific Railroad train before it cleared the tracks.

The train slammed into the truck and pushed it off the tracks where it rested on its side. The train did not derail.

Deputies say the tanker, which usually carries saltwater, was empty, so there is no threat to residents or the environment.

Blakeney was taken to LSU Health. Deputies cited him for failure to yield at a railroad crossing.
