UL Lafayette offering LGBT minor

LAFAYETTE, LA (WAFB) -

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) Studies is the newest minor added to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette's curriculum.

Dean of ULL's Liberal Arts Department, Jordan Kellman says the minor was created because of student demand. Kellman thinks the LGBT studies will give graduates more job opportunities.

"Management of all kinds, social work, human resource management in particular, and law enforcement are all fields where the knowledge of how different groups within society function and is extremely important and valued in the workplace," he said.

Congressman Jeff Landry says with state schools under financial strain, the minor is not a good idea.

In a statement Landry wrote "we must effectively allocate these scarce resources and give priority to those courses and minors that provide demonstrable employment benefits."

Kellman says since LGBT studies is just a minor, it requires no extra funding.

"Minors don't cost any money; they require no allocation of resources."

In an open letter to the university, the American Civil Liberties Union has commended U-L Lafayette for the LGBT minor.
