Thefts in Caddo Parish are up

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Thefts in Caddo parish are up.

"In April, we had 60 thefts, mMay we had 72, and in June we had 77," says Lt. Bill Rehak with the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office.

And that trend is expected to continue.

Rehak says thieves are typically more active during the summer months. "A lot of it is crime of opportunity, people leave things out, they leave their things exposed in the car like a phone or laptop computer," says Rehak.

But it's not just your car that's targeted. Your home could be as well.

"The bad guy will knock on the door if nobody answers they'll size the property up to commit a crime, somebody does answer the door on the other hand, ‘can I use your phone, or does such and such live here?" says Rehak.

That's the kind of thing Caddo investigators want to hear about before the crime happens.

Rehak says you can be proactive too, by putting your belongings away when you park your car, writing down your serial numbers and letting law enforcement know if you see suspicious activity around your neighborhood.

"[If] You feel a little funny about it, that's somebody we need to check out," says Rehak.
