TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
An East Texas couple decides to get rid of their animals by dumping them at a veterinary clinic, and it's all caught on tape.
West Tyler Veterinary Clinic says around 5:50 a.m. on June 28, 2012, kittens were dropped off in front of their building.
They say while they do love animals, they are not a shelter
"It has happened before. So it doesn't surprise me," says Dr. Mark Borah, West Tyler Veterinary Clinic.
On Thursday morning a Ford truck pulled into the West Tyler Veterinary Clinic drive and dumped two kittens in a box.
"I don't know what a Ford pick-up cost lately, but I imagine if you can afford one of those you can afford to take care of two kittens, or afford to take them to an animal shelter," says Dr. Borah.
Dr. Borah says he loves animals; he is a veterinarian. However, it's the dumping that frustrates him. In the state of Texas, dumping of any sort is illegal.
"I'm sure the people thought 'well we'll dump them off here,' but you can't do that. It's illegal dumping," says Constable Tommy Goodman, Precinct 5.
Goodman says he was called out to the clinic and found a label on the box with a David's Bridal address.
"Texas law says in illegal dumping when we find an address that remains on items that were dumped then we go back to that person, because by law that person is responsible for that item from start to finish," says Goodman.
Goodman says someone likely grabbed a box from David's Bridal's trash.
He says to avoid situations like this, businesses should strip the labels off of boxes before throwing them away.
David's Bridal corporate office issued this statement:
"We understand that kittens were recently dropped off at a local veterinarian's office in a box. While the box had a prior shipping label from our store, a box from any store or provider could have been used for this purpose. We are very glad to hear that the kittens were found safe and sound."
Both kittens were adopted the same day they were dumped.
Goodman says the suspects could be charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty and with illegal dumping.
