Caddo sheriff: Help take a bite out of rising property thefts

Posted: Updated:
CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

Summer thefts are rising with summer temperatures, and Caddo Parish Sheriff's officials are warning residents to keep watch over their belongings more now than ever before.

Officials say there were 60 thefts reported in April, 72 in May and 77 in June. The upward trend is typical as the weather warms, Sheriff Steve Prator says, adding that detering thieves is mainly a matter of protecting your property.

"The majority of thefts seem to be crimes of opportunity such as lawn mowers left in plain view or vehicles being left unlocked," Prator said.

Authorities remind you to keep your property locked up and, to help your neighbors, report any suspicious activity you see.

Prator also recommends:

• Trimming back trees and shrubs from doors and windows of your home;
• Videotaping the contents of your home, storage shed, and garage; and
• Engraving all valuables, including tools, lawn equipment and air conditioners, with your driver's license number – not your Social Security number.

To report suspicious activity, call the Caddo Sheriff's Office at 675-2170 or Crime Stoppers at 673-7373.
