MINDEN, LA (KSLA) -

A fallen hero received special recognition along a Northwest Louisiana interchange Tuesday.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development named I-20 at Highway 371 the Sergeant Joshua Barrett Madden Interchange. Sgt. Madden was killed in action in December 2006. He was the first Minden soldier killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

State Senator Robert Adley says the sign memorializes Madden's commitment to his country and ensures that we will never forget his sacrifice.

Madden's family says his commemoration is just the beginning. "This is just the tip of the iceberg.  We didn't know they were gonna start with our son.  We're very proud of that.  We want every family in Louisiana who has lost someone to be able to stand here as we do today," says Jerry Madden, Joshua's father.

Madden's father says his son joined the military to make a difference. Madden was one of five Task Force Lightning soldiers who conducted combat operations in Iraq. All five soldiers in his unit died after a roadside bomb attack.

The memorial was initiated by House Bill 324, passed earlier this year.
