CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

A large chunk of the Caddo Lake Bridge on La. 1 in Mooringsport came loose and fell out Saturday afternoon, just twelve days after a state inspection.

Caddo Parish sheriff's deputies have blocked off the bridge, and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development says it will be closed until at least early next week for minor deck patching. Traffic will be detoured via La. 169 and La. 538 through Mooringsport.

The hole is about three feet by four feet, leaving the deck's rebar visible from the bridge roadway, Caddo Sheriff's office spokeswoman Cindy Chadwick says. "You can actually see water from the road," Chadwick says, quoting a deputy who had seen the hole.

A concerned citizen called the sheriff's office to inform it of the damage, Chadwick says. Authorities have not said what caused the hole in the roadway. No one has been injured because of the damage.

On June 19, the Louisiana DOTD advised motorists that the bridge would be restricted to one lane of traffic for one day. "This closure is for bridge inspection," the state wrote in a memo. Calls requesting confirmation that the inspection took place and what the findings were have not yet been returned.
