Supporters start petition for Shreveport dog park

The Shreveport Dog Park Alliance said they hope to make progress this week on their stalled dog park.

Funding for the park, which would be located at Hamel Memorial Park off Clyde Fant Parkway in Shreveport, was approved last week by the Red River Waterway Commission. But Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover has decided not to sign off on that money because other projects should come first.

"We had two in the last town I lived in. It was great because it was in my neighborhood," said Matthews, who lives down the road from where the proposed dog park in Shreveport would be built.

Matthews started a petition last week after Glover said he would not sign off on the $280,000 project. The petition generated more than 600 signatures in less than a week.

"This is an effort for dog owners and non-dog owners. This is something that would benefit the city no matter who you are."

Glover took to Twitter on Friday to express his frustrations about how the project has been handled. He questioned the commission's priorities.

Cynthia Keith has worked as the Shreveport Dog Park Alliance Director since 2007.

"When the parish jumped in to help and put it on the fast track, we're questioning why the mayor all of the sudden says it's not a priority," said Keith. "I'm not upset. I'm embarrassed by the way this has been handled."

The alliance plans to meet on Wednesday to discuss the dog park. On Thursday, the alliance is scheduled to sit down with the mayor to talk about the plans and where to go from here.
