SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Fire officials were sent out to a cell phone tower in Downtown Shreveport Tuesday for what they believed was a bomb.

Shreveport firefighters and police responded to a report of two backpacks left at the base of a cell phone tower near the Old Ogilvie Hardware building. Shreveport Fire Department Chief Fred Sanders says they called in the bomb squad to investigate. A bomb sniffing dog determined that there were no explosives in the backpacks. Sanders says the backpacks had been there for quite some time. "They were right underneath the tower but after talking to contractors who enter this area all the time, they informed us the backpacks have been there approximately three weeks, that they had even moved those backpacks. But for precautionary measures we wanted our explosive canines to come out and check it out," says Sanders.

Sanders says officials have been paying more attention to towers because 61 cell phone towers have been burglarized in Louisiana recently.

The fire department still doesn't know who left the backpacks at the cell tower.
