SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
There's a fight on to save little "George Strait," and a local veterinary hospital asks for donations to help the dog's owners defray medical expenses.
Owner Charlene Giddings just got the pug from a breeder a few weeks ago. She says he's named after George Strait because she listened to the country star the whole time she was deployed in Kuwait. "So when it came time to figure out his name, it just made sense."
But now, George is fighting for his life. He needs surgery, and the vet at Towne South Animal hospital says the costs could reach $3,000. "George has a congenital defect, which is shunting blood away from his liver," says Dr. April Mackey. "Without surgery he will likely not live a long time."
To complicate matters, George's owners, both currently serving in the Air Force, are getting married within a few days, so money is tight. "He's supposed to be our ringbearer, but I don't know if he can make it," Charlene says. "We can't replace him. No one is this cute."
"When we were deployed, we planned our who el life around him, so, he's our first child," Charlene continues. "He's more than a dog to us, he's our first baby, and we'll do anything for him."
The surgery could take place as early as Wednesday.
