NATCHITOCHES PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

Natchitoches Parish sheriff's deputies have jailed a Provencal man on a charge of second degree murder.

Natchitoches Parish Sheriff Victor Jones, Jr. says  deputies were called to 55-year-old Phyllis McMahon's home on Willie Banes Road near Provencal Thursday night after family members reported her missing.

Jones says McMahon's son, 21-year-old James McMahon had reported to a sibling, who lived nearby, that their mother was missing.  The sibling, along with friends, went to the McMahon residence and began searching for her.  After failing to locate her, they called the sheriff's office.

After a thorough search of the area around the residence, Mrs. McMahon's body was discovered in the home's oxidation pond.  Jones says deputies began an investigation that ended with the arrest of James McMahon.  He is currently being held in the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center on second degree murder.  Jones says the investigation revealed that a physical altercation had occurred between the mother and her son, that ended with the death of the mother.

Jones says the official cause of death will not be released until an autopsy report is completed.
