MIAMI (WSVN/CNN) - A homeless man whose face was mostly chewed off in a bizarre attack is awake and alert at a Miami hospital.

A photograph shown to reporters Tuesday shows the upper two-thirds of Ronald Poppo's face covered in scabs.

He's missing his nose and both eye sockets are covered - one with gauze and one with what appears to be a skin graft. 

Another photo shows Poppo walking down a hospital hallway, supported by hospital staff on either side of him.

He's been at Jackson Memorial Hospital since he was attacked May 26 by 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, who moments earlier had been swinging naked on a nearby light pole.

A police officer shot and killed Eugene. Police believe he may have been on drugs at the time. 

Autopsy results are still pending. However, initial reports say there was no human flesh in his stomach.
