Student accused of sharing prescription drugs with classmates

ASHDOWN, AR (KSLA) -

Police are investigating a student for allegedly bringing prescription drugs to school to share with other students.

Ashdown, Arkansas Police Chief Doyle Crouch says the incident happened at Ashdown Junior High School. Crouch says a sixth grade student brought a powdery substance to school Tuesday and shared it with fellow students. "She had given it to approximately 10 other students in small amounts. They had licked it, ingested it and immediately become ill," says Crouch. "We were able to recover the bottle that the original substance came from."

Crouch says at least one student was taken to a Texarkana hospital and others were checked out by a doctor at the school. "Some of them thought it was candy but we are just taking statements from everyone who were involved. And we are sorting out the facts," says Crouch. "We do believe that it was a good possibility that it was a prescription medication that the student was able to acquire and took to school."

A woman who did not want to be identified says she is frustrated with what happened at the junior high school. "My son came home and told me about the incident," says the woman. "The drugs have gotten out of hand, the bullying in the schools have gotten out of hand. Parents need to come together and get united to get this issue taken care of." She says she has three children in the Ashdown school system.

Most of the sick children were back at school Wednesday.

Crouch says a chemical analysis is being performed to identify the powdery substance. He says police are still investigating the incident and juvenile charges could be filed against the sixth grader.
