Two good Samaritans rescued a man in a motorized wheelchair from a burning brush pile. The rescue happened Monday around noon in the community of Elderville in Gregg County.
Karin Henson is meeting the men who saved her husband, Brian, from flames.
Joe Meadows and his co-worker, Brent, were driving when they spotted a large brush pile on fire, and a man in a motorized chair too close to the flames. Meadows says he knew something wasn't right.
"He was kicking at the fire and we just thought maybe it was getting a little out of control so we said we should turn around and we weren't thinking nothing really bad just wanted to make sure he was okay," said Meadows, "When we passed here we saw that he was in the fire."
Meadows says Brian was in the middle of the fire when he pulled him out.
"He was conscious," said Meadows, "I think he knew I was coming because I remember him, I'm pretty sure I remember him saying, 'help me get me out of here.'"
Those words, Meadows says will stick with him for the rest of his life.
Brian's wife says she's thankful Meadows followed his instinct. She says her husband suffers from second and third degree burns, but he is here and will recover.
"If he would have perhaps not come at all or a little later, my husband would have probably been burned in the fire," she said.
A chance encounter that saved Brian's life. Meadows says he was just doing what was right, and he would do it again right now if he had to.
Brian will remain hospitalized in Dallas for at least another week. His wife was on her way back to the hospital to be with her husband Wednesday night.
