Shreveport City Council talks parking ticket late fee increase

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The Downtown Development Authority is asking Shreveport City Council to increase the rate for a parking ticket that's paid late.

Right now, the $10 ticket goes up to $25 if paid late. The DDA is asking for an increase to $50.

To date, more than $105,000 worth of tickets has gone unpaid this year.

DDA Executive Director Liz Swaine says writing tickets is not a money maker, but that paid parking is just a fact of life. They looked at other cities across the United States and found that downtown Shreveport has lower meter rates and ticket rates than most other comparable cities.

Swaine says this move would bring downtown more in line with other downtowns of similar size and function.

It was scheduled for a first reading at a city council meeting Tuesday. Councilors will vote at a meeting later this month.
