SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Activists in Shreveport have spoken out about the controversial North Carolina amendment that would ban same sex marriages across the state. Adrienne Critcher is the communications director for PACE which stands for People Acting for Change and Equality.  She said a lot of voters in North Carolina have not been informed on what this ban would do to the entire state.

"This amendment not only bans same sex marriage in the state constitution but it also bans any form of civil unions or domestic partnerships."

Critcher said that includes straight couples who have not gotten married. She also said that if the amendment was passed children who receive health insurance benefits from a parent in a domestic partnership would lose their healthcare.

"This will impact 10s of thousands of children."

Louisiana doe not ban civil unions or domestic partnerships but Critcher said this kind of ban would set a standard for other states across the country.

"If people were really concerned about protecting marriage, they'll pass a constitutional amendment to ban divorce."
