CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

A Caddo Parish jury has found Kimethia Coleman, 26, guilty of second degree murder in the January 2010 stabbing death of her boyfriend, U.S Air Force Sgt. Brian Spinks. She stabbed him 64 times and slit his throat.

She pleaded not guilty, by reason of insanity. Prosecutors argued that she killed him because he'd broken up with her. They referenced a voicemail he left her earlier the morning of the stabbing telling her they were over.

"I hate that it came down to this...over a simple break-up. It wasn't necessary," says Brian Spinks' brother, Jerrid Spinks.

"It was unnecessary," adds his father Rydell Dennis. "Sympathy goes out to them {Colemans} as a family, and prayers as well. But it wasn't necessary. But justice was served for Brian."

After six days of testimony, the jury began deliberations around 6:10 p.m. Wednesday evening.

The jury returned to the courtroom shortly after 7 p.m. and requested to hear the tape of Coleman's call to 911. The jury also requested to view the crime scene video. Jurors returned to their deliberation at 7:50 p.m.

Prosecutors finished closing arguments shortly after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, with Caddo Parish Assistant District Attorney Dale Cox telling the jury, "Whoever did that to him [Brian Spinks] did that with the intent to kill or do great bodily harm. Whoever slashed Brian Spinks' throat did so in a savage manner with the understanding that that would be the final fatal blow."

When asked if the guilty verdict provided the family closer, Rydell Dennis said-"Nobody won. There's no winner in this at all. Two families have lost...so there's no closure."

Coleman was taken into custody promptly after the verdict was read, and taken to Caddo Correctional Center.

Formal sentencing is scheduled for May 11 at 10:00 a.m. She faces life in prison.
