KLTV obtained all 16 pages of a settlement document, which gives specific details that settled the sexual harassment case against Smith County Precinct 5 Constable Dennis Taylor.
Former deputy Wendy Savering took Taylor to federal court in January 2011. The lawsuit claimed Taylor made unwanted sexual advances towards Savering. Savering was awarded $200,000, half of which went to attorney fees.
Smith County taxpayers footed $20,000 of that settlement. The rest was paid by the county's insurance. The county says they're not sure if their insurance premium will go up.
As part of the settlement, "a positive employment letter of reference signed by Constable Dennis Taylor" had to be provided.
In Taylor's letter, he wrote "because of her desire to learn and enjoyment of her job, I believe that she would be a valuable resource or employer".
The county also agreed to "reflect an honorable discharge", and to "reinstate her as a non-paid reserve deputy".
We called Taylor to talk about this settlement, he said he wanted to talk. But the county says as part of the confidentiality agreement, they cannot say much about the documentation. To read the settlement, click here.
The county says they do not tolerate sexual harassment, however, they say Constable Dennis Taylor is an elected official and answers to the taxpayers, not the commissioners court.
